The Book of Insignificant Movements

Cadence :: Draft

Cadence.

In music it is the silence between a series of notes that creates the music.

Out of the nothing, comes the everything.

It is the nothingness that makes it possible for the music to be, and to breath.

Without cadence you have random noise with no way to hear the pattern.

Human work systems have the same need: To breath. To have the silence around which music can be made.

Human work systems need a heartbeat to which everything can be synchronised to.

If you don’t consciously choose your cadence, it typically becomes tied to the budgeting cycle. And everything happens in annual cycles.

We can do better. We can make better music.

Fit smaller cadences within the biggest cadence. Align the moments of rest to the heartbeat of the biggest cycle.
